However, a common thought holds people back: “Am I too old to start something new?” When it comes to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), the answer is a definitive “no.” In fact, starting Jiu Jitsu at 40 is not a disadvantage. It can be your greatest strength.

The “Over 40” Advantage in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Younger practitioners often rely on raw strength and athleticism. However, practitioners over 40 bring different assets to the mat. These assets are often more valuable in BJJ.

Strategy Over Strength

Jiu-Jitsu is often called “human chess.” It is a game of leverage, timing, and strategy. It is not about being the strongest or fastest. It is about being the smartest. As an adult over 40, you bring life experience. You bring patience. You also bring a mature approach to learning. Therefore, you are better equipped to understand the deep strategies of BJJ. You will focus on technique. You will learn to be efficient. This “thinking person’s” approach leads to high-level Jiu-Jitsu.

A Focus on Longevity

When you are 20, you often train with reckless abandon. When you are 40, you train with intelligence. You understand the importance of protecting your body. You value consistency over intensity. This mindset is perfect for BJJ. In fact, it is the key to longevity in the sport. You will learn to train safely. You will focus on smooth, technical movements. As a result, you can enjoy this art for decades to come.

Top Benefits of BJJ for Encinitas Residents Over 40

The positive impact of BJJ is holistic. It transforms your body, your mind, and your life.

Unmatched Physical Fitness

Are you bored with the gym? BJJ is the ultimate fitness solution. It is a full-body workout that builds functional strength. You will use muscles you did not know you had. Moreover, it is an incredible cardio workout. It improves your endurance significantly. Unlike high-impact sports, BJJ is focused on grappling. Therefore, it is much easier on your joints. You will improve your mobility, balance, and flexibility. Many of our Encinitas adult students report feeling in the best shape of their lives.

The Ultimate Stress Relief

Life in your 40s can be stressful. You manage career demands, family responsibilities, and more. BJJ is a powerful tool for stress relief. When you are on the mats, you must be 100% present. You cannot think about work emails or your to-do list. Instead, you are focused on the physical problem in front of you. This state of complete focus is like a “moving meditation.” It clears your mind. After class, you feel a profound sense of calm and accomplishment.

Practical, Real-World Self-Defense

The need to protect yourself and your family is real. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is widely regarded as the most effective martial art for realistic self-defense. It teaches you how to control a larger, stronger attacker. It empowers you to manage a situation from your feet or on the ground. This provides an incredible sense of security. Knowing you have the skills to defend yourself is a powerful feeling.

As he puts it: “This sport is too damn fun not to go as much as your life permits!!!”

ABOUT NELSON

Professor Nelson Monteiro was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, the birthplace of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He started training when he was 13 years old under the direct tutelage of Master Carlos Gracie Jr. at the world-renowned Gracie Barra Academy. With unrivaled dedication, Professor Monteiro trained diligently until he was awarded the black belt in 1989; and in the same year, he received a bachelorʼs degree in physical education from Gama Filho University. Professor Monteiro is one of the original pioneers of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the United States. After receiving his black belt and graduating from college, Professor Monteiro moved to San Diego in 1990 and began teaching Jiu-Jitsu out of his garage in Encinitas. After steady growth in enrollment, Professor Monteiro moved to a larger space in Del Mar, where the academy continued to prosper. After the 1993 debut of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu experienced a meteoric rise in popularity. The world had now witnessed the effectiveness of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as the unassuming Royce Gracie used leverage and technique to defeat his larger and stronger opponents. People from all walks of life began to search for qualified instructors. As a result, the academy experienced even greater growth.

In 1995, a new student arrived at the academy. This new student would soon have a profound effect not only on Professor Monteiro but also on the future of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The new arrival was Sheik Tahnoon Bin Zayed Al Nayan, a prince of the United Arab Emirates. Bin, as his friends would call him, became a dedicated private student of Professor Monteiro. After training for 8 months, the prince invited Professor Monteiro to come to the UAE to become his private Jiu-Jitsu instructor. Professor Monteiro accepted.

While training the prince and other enthusiasts in the UAE, Professor Monteiro helped to form the Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC), which would evolve into the most prestigious grappling tournament in the world, the Abu Dhabi Submission Wrestling Championships. During this four-year period, Professor Monteiro also trained many champions in Vale-Tudo, MMA, and sport Jiu-Jitsu. With many accomplishments resulting from his stay in the UAE, Professor Monteiro decided to make his way back to Brazil.

In 2000, he and his family moved back to Rio de Janeiro. While living back in Brazil, Professor Monteiro opened a health club and continued his education in the field of sport physiology. In addition, Professor Monteiro continued his efforts in spreading Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu by traveling around the world conducting seminars. After four years in Brazil, Professor Monteiro and his family decided to come back to San Diego.

In 2006, Professor Monteiro opened Gracie Barra Encinitas. Since its grand opening, the academy has become one of the most respected Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu schools in the San Diego area. Professor Monteiroʼs positive attitude, charismatic personality, and passion for Jiu-Jitsu have been an integral part of the academyʼs success. Professor Monteiro is still an active athlete, competing in many of the major Brazilian Jiu-jitsu tournaments worldwide. With over 25 years of experience, Professor Monteiro is one of the most knowledgeable instructors teaching today.
